Elon Musk Reportedly Eyeing Liverpool FC Purchase, Father Confirms Interest
Elon Musk, the tech mogul and influential political figure, may be setting his sights on the sports world. Reports suggest the billionaire is interested in acquiring Liverpool FC, one of England’s most celebrated soccer clubs.
Nicknamed "The Reds," Liverpool has a storied history in English and international soccer. The club has won 19 league titles, 8 FA Cups, a record 10 League Cups, and 16 FA Community Shields. Internationally, Liverpool boasts 6 European Cups, 3 UEFA Cups, 4 UEFA Super Cups — all English records — and 1 FIFA Club World Cup.
As of May 2024, Liverpool is valued at $5.37 billion, ranking as the fourth most valuable football club globally, according to Forbes.
Musk’s father, Errol Musk, recently addressed the speculation in an interview with Times Radio.
“Oh yes, but that doesn’t mean he’s buying it,” Errol Musk said. “He would like to, yes, obviously, anybody would want to. So would I.” However, he declined to provide further details, joking, “I can’t comment on that. They’ll raise the price.”
Despite Errol Musk’s comments, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the current owner of Liverpool FC, denied the rumors. A spokesperson told the Associated Press there is “no truth to these rumors.”
FSG recently sold a minority stake in the club to U.S. investment firm Dynasty Equity in September 2023. At the time, FSG President Mike Gordon reiterated the group’s commitment to Liverpool, stating, “Our long-term commitment to Liverpool remains as strong as ever. We have always said that if there is an investment partner that is right for Liverpool, then we would pursue the opportunity to help ensure the club’s long-term financial resiliency and future growth.”
Errol Musk also mentioned family ties to Liverpool, adding, “We have relatives in Liverpool and were fortunate enough to know quite a few of the Beatles because they grew up with us — my family.”
Elon Musk has recently been active in British politics, particularly after the center-left Labour Party’s election victory in July. Using his social media platform, X, Musk has called for a new election, further cementing his influence in the UK.
While Musk’s potential interest in Liverpool FC remains speculative, his involvement in both politics and global business continues to fuel intrigue.
